When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment. Retention is a lifetime commitment. Your final orthodontic result depends on your retainers, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far. Remember to remove your retainer before brushing, and brush your retainer before placing it back in your mouth.

Removable & Fixed Retainers

Maxillary wrap-around retainers or clear Essix or Trutain retainers are your upper retainers.  These retainers are removable. You must be very careful when handling your upper retainers, as they are fragile and costly to replace. Your treatment fee includes your first set of retainers.  If you lose or break a retainer, there will be a fee to replace them.

You are given a special case for your retainer; please make sure you keep them in this case when not wearing it! To clean these retainers, brush them with toothpaste and cold water.  Your retainers should be worn at all times with the exception of eating and brushing your teeth. Your retainer should also be removed when participating in sports that require a mouthguard or while swimming. After one month of full-time wear, we may revise your retention treatment, allowing the retainer to strictly be worn at night.

Most of our patients wil also have a bonded lower lingual retainer that is attached to the back side of the lower anterior teeth.  This retainer will remain in place indefinitely to maintain the nice alignment of your teeth that we have obtained.

How long are retainers worn?

Generally, retainers are worn full time for a short period of time (approximately 4-8 weeks) after your braces are removed.  After that point, removable retainers are to be worn at night.  Please remember two things:

1.) You are responsible for keeping your teeth straight.  We have worked hard together to position the teeth properly. Your job is to keep them that way.

2.) Everyone's teeth will continue to move and shift through our adult years regardless of whether or not orthodontic treatment has been done.  If you want to keep your teeth as they are now, you will have to wear your retainers indefinitely as often as you need to to maintain the tooth alignment.

3.) If your retainer is lost or broken then phone our office right away.  You will need to be seen and have a new impression made so we can fabricate a new retainer.  There will be a charge for replacement or repair of retainers. The fee si due at the time of replacement.  Retainers are necessry to maintain your investment so remember to  follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far!
